Gopal Chandra Memorial College of Education was established in 1967 to prepare quality teachers in Science, Humanities and Commerce. Kolkata is well-known all over India as a historical and religious place of pilgrimage as well as an educational centre. The motto of the institution is “Light to Enlighten”. The students are expected to become lights of the society to illuminate the world. Institute is situated 19 kms. away from the Sealdah Railway Station and 6 kms. from Netaji Subhash Chandra Bose International Airport, Dum Dum, Kolkata. This Institute contains its spacious buildings, playgrounds and gardens. It is affiliated to WBUTTEPA University, Kolkata and its courses are recognized by the NCTE, New Delhi.
The College was started with the main objective of qualitative improvement of school education through innovative pre-service and in-service teacher training programmes and relevant development and extension activities. This is a Govt. aided Educational Institution under the State Government of West Bengal, India. The College is also listed for grants under the 2(f) & 12(B) scheme of the University Grants Commission and RUSA, Government of India.
Gopal Chandra Memorial College of Education was started in July, 1967 to provide Teacher Education to the B.Ed. standard of the University of Calcutta. To pay homage to Late Principal Gopal Chandra Majumdar, this college was established by Late Haripada Biswas, founder Secretary of ‘New Barrackpore Shiksha Samaj’ and founder of ‘New Barrackpore Co-Operative Homes Limited’. The college was inaugurated on July 2, 1967 by the Hon’ble Justice Sri Durga Das Bose of the High Court of Calcutta and the first session duly commenced on 3 July, 1967. The college was under Calcutta University up to the session 2007-2008. Then it was affiliated to West Bengal State University, Barasat from 2008-2009 to session 2015-2017.
Now it is affiliated to The West Bengal University of Teachers Training Education Planning and Administration, Kolkata from the session 2016-2018 onwards. The College has celebrated its Golden Jubilee during 2016-2017 by arranging various programmes with active participation of different stake holders. At present the college is recognised by NCTE, New Delhi and assessed and accredited by NAAC. It was graded as B+ on 2004 by NAAC and was reaccredited on the year 2016. Basing on the reaccreditation score, the college has received RUSA grants from MHRD and Government of West Bengal. A new Annex building of the college is under construction now with help of this grant received from RUSA for which we are thankful to both Central and State Government.
